Tottenham Hotspur

On September 26, 1993, as the team played Ipswich Town in the 1993–94 FA Premier League season, he made his club debut. Stephen Carr had to wait until the 1996–1997 season to establish himself as a consistent member of the first team, and during that time, he made 28 appearances.

His efforts during the 1999–2000 season, along with his “Thunderous piledriver” goal against champions Manchester United, were maybe his finest ever. Throughout the 2000–01 season, his reputation grew, and other teams started to express interest in signing him. Carr was not fit again until October 2002.

Newcastle United

Carr was said to be moving to Newcastle United and has links to Manchester United. Bobby Robson, the team’s manager at the time, signed Carr to a four-year contract for £2 million in August 2004. Graeme Souness took his position, and like Robson, he thought of Carr as a first-team player.

On August 14, Carr made his club debut in a 2-2 tie with Middlesbrough. In the 2004–2005 season, he participated in 26 league games and scored one goal. Against Southampton, he scored the team’s opening goal with a “Fierce shot from well outside the box.”

He could only play for the club in 19 league games during the 2005–06 season due to a recurring knee ailment that kept him out for two months. One of several injured players for Newcastle during the 2006–07 season, Carr missed a few months of play due to a fractured foot.

After Nolberto Solano excelled at right-back during Carr’s absence, raising doubts about his future at the club, he came back for the 2-2 draw against West Ham United on January 20, 2007, stepping in at an unfamiliar left-back position.

Carr was dismissed at the end of the season as a result of Kevin Keegan’s decision not to renew his contract due to Beye’s outstanding play and Carr’s failure to retain health. Carr retired from all kinds of football on December 1st, 2008, after failing to locate a suitable club.

Stephen Carr Birmingham City

Stephen Carr  started working out with Birmingham City in February 2009 to come out of retirement, and on February 23, he signed a one-month deal with the team. Carr got a contract extension until the season’s conclusion.

Carr re-signed with Birmingham on a two-year deal after the team was promoted to the Premier League. He was a member of the Birmingham team that went 15 games undefeated in all competitions, including a club record 12 unbeaten in the top division, during the 2009–10 Premier League season. He was appointed acting captain in Lee Carsley’s absence due to injury and squad rotation.

After making an “offensive gesture” against Aston Villa fans towards the conclusion of the neighborhood derby, which Birmingham ultimately lost due to a contentious late penalty, Carr was given a one-match suspension for improper behavior before the end of the season.

Carr participated in every match of Birmingham’s 2010–11 Premier League campaign, during which time they were demoted to the Championship. Birmingham then exercised their option to keep Carr on staff for another season.

Carr made his 100th game for Birmingham against Portuguese club Nacional in the opening leg of the Europa League play-off round, the team’s first involvement in a major European competition in over 50 years.

Due to knee cartilage damage, he missed a large portion of the second half of the 2011–12 season. His contract was set to end in June, but after Lee Clark, a former teammate from Newcastle, was named Birmingham’s manager, he agreed to a one-year extension.

After being unable to play again, Carr declared his retirement from football after the 2012–13 season. Carr indicated that he and his family wanted to travel to Spain, where he had business interests, despite Clark’s best efforts to get him to remain at Birmingham as a coach.

Carr has represented his nation at the schoolboy, young adult, under-18, under-21, and total international levels. Having played 39 times for his country, Carr initially resigned from the international stage after the side missed qualifying for the 2006 World Cup.

Carr announced his retirement from international football on November 14, 2007, citing injuries and the dismissal of Irish manager Staunton.
