Between 1995 and 1997, he trained at Lyon’s youth academy and won the Under-15 and Under-17 championships. He captained France’s Under-18s.

On February 21, 1998, at age 18, he made his professional debut against Montpellier. He played 96 games for the club, including 12 Champions League games and two goals. Lyon won the 2001 French Coupe de la Ligue without Malbranque.

Born in Belgium, he played for the French Under-21s and lost the 2002 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship final to the Czech Republic.

Steed Malbranque wanted to play for Belgium after failing to make France’s senior squad in 2004. Aimé Anthuenis, the Red Devils’ coach, said Malbranque was ineligible. Malbranque was selected into the France senior team a month later but was unused.

Malbranque was called up to the French squad for a November 2012 friendly against Italy but did not play.
